The Meaning of Trusting in Jesus

Faith without sight is not trusting in Jesus. It essentially gives our lives up to the Savior, placing Him at the heart of a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit, and developing a close bond with the heavenly Father. Eternal life is a result of faith in Jesus.

After His resurrection, Jesus made a striking remark to His unbelieving follower Thomas that is recorded in the Bible: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).

Everyone, in my opinion, may benefit from this idea: God blesses us as long as we have faith in him. Among the various benefits, those who put their trust in Him have promised peace (John 16:33) and happiness (Proverbs 19:23).

What does it mean to put your faith in Jesus, then? We can gain knowledge from the Bible in at least three different areas.

1. Commit to Him Our Ways (His will)

Giving our lives to Jesus means we are trusting in Him. It is to have complete faith in Him, even when we don’t understand, and to always rely on His direction (Proverbs 3:5-6).

In the same way that Jesus asks for God’s will to be done rather than His own (Luke 22:42), we are to adopt the same attitude of letting the almighty God rule our lives.

As we put our trust in Jesus, we are transformed into new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17), with a renewed desire to live in subjection to God rather than to gratify our own desires (which only Christ can do through His work of redemption, according to Galatians 2:20).

2. Seek Peace in Him (His love)

“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has declared, will have rivers of living water pour out of his heart,” says Jesus (John 7:38). It is the Holy Spirit’s work of regeneration in us that results in the fruit of righteousness and changes us into the likeness of Christ (Titus 3:5-7). We can therefore accept the Lord’s offer to rest in Him by laying all of our anxieties and worries on Him (Matthew 11:28).

Christ is our Good Shepherd, and in him, we have all that is good (Psalm 23). By placing Jesus at the center of our lives, we are able to rest peacefully in our minds and spirits. This is what it means to trust in Jesus.

3. Take Joy in Him (His promise)

All who believe are born as children of God through the act of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. A close, emotional connection with the heavenly Father is a result of trusting in Jesus.

We can actually take pleasure in the Lord and enjoy our connection with Him now that we have been set free from the bonds of sin and the penalty of death (Psalm 37:4).

Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love for us in Christ, our Savior, so we can be certain of that as well (Romans 8:38-39).

Why Is This Important?

The best choice we can ever make in life is to put our faith and our lives in the hands of Jesus. Salvation is a result of the Trinity, not of human works.

Through trust in Christ’s work of salvation and the Spirit’s work of regeneration, we are saved by God’s grace. All glory and honor belong to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
